1 Cor 1:18-21
18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
KJV
Funning thing about preaching, how few want it today. God proclaims that by preaching comes salvation. Isn’t that what verse 21 says? What man thinks is foolish God uses to bring lost souls to Jesus Christ. But how few want to hear preaching today. I believe that is what is behind the new home church movement, professing believers trying to get away from the preaching of the Word of God. With preaching comes reproof, comes correction, comes conviction, at least that is what the Bible says. (2 Tim 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.) And the very next verse tells us that people will not want that preaching. (2 Tim 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;) I have never heard of the home Bible study that produces those things, of the home church that produces those things. Those movements were born out of disdain for preaching, not a desire for it. But preaching is still God’s way, still God’s method and God is not about to change. Think of that the next time you feel that going to church is not important, that going to church to hear the preaching of the Word is not something you or your family really needs. What man calls foolish God is using.
