1 John 3:16-18 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
KJV
Most likely none of us are going to be called to sacrifice our life for a brother or sister in Christ, so what are some ways we can show the depth of our live for them? One of those ways is found verse 17 of our text. Not only can we have a compassionate heart, we can show that by coming to the aid of one in need. When was the last time you put the needs of someone else before yours, the last time you helped when there was a need? I don’t mean just praying for another, as we should all do, but going to them, lending a hand, going out of your way. Most reading this will not be able to remember the last time they went to one in need and not only asked if there was something they could do, they did something. We can give financially when there is a need as well. (1 John 3:17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?) If we have an abundance and another has a need, we can give where it seems to hurt the most people, we can open our purse to them. Friend, we can be a help to others in their time of need, we can show up, put our arms around them and pray with them. We can lend a hand where they have something that needs done and they are having a difficult time. We can give to help meet a need. We can be a help and if we love the Lord Jesus Christ we will be. How often do you show your love for the Lord in this way?
