Prov 30:5-6 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
KJV
The word shield is found 45 times in the Bible and what is interesting about that word is how many times it is used in a spiritual way. I would like that to be a theme for our week of devotions. What does a shield do? It protects the one in battle. The first time the word shield is used in the bible it has a spiritual meaning. (Gen 15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.) The last time the word shield is used in the Bible it has a spiritual meaning. (Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.)
We find that our shield needs to be God. (Gen 15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.) And for our shield to be God we need to know Him in a personal way, we need to have a personal relationship with Him through the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the one who gave His life a sacrifice for sin. If you don’t know God then He cannot be your shield. What are you or who are you depending upon to be your protection? Do you have a loving spouse, loving parents, a good job, a good savings account, what are you depending upon today as your shield? All that I just named can be lost in a moment of time, then where will you be, who will protect you? God told Abraham that He was his shield and his reward. This comes after God called Abraham and that man in faith followed the Lord. (Gen 12) That is the first step one must take in having the Lord Jesus Christ as his or her shield. Follow the call of God, and what is God calling you to do? First, be born again, have a time when you confess and repent of sin, a time when you turn in faith to Jesus Christ. Unless and until you do that dear reading none of what we will share this week can be for you. Make Jesus Christ your shield today.
