34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

The first and only time the word Calvary is found in the Bible points to all the firsts that were taking place that day. Yes thousands had been crucified on crosses, yes it was a somewhat common death for those condemned to die by Rome, but on that day, on the day Jesus Christ died upon that cross there were many firsts. It was the first and only time one was given a title of nobility for all the world to read. (Luke 23:37-38 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. 38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.) Written in the three major languages of the world at that time and in that place everyone could see this was not an ordinary person dying on that cross, this was a king. But even Pilot did not know what he was having placed on that cross for Jesus was not only King of the Jews but also the God of all creation, the one who had and has authority over all, the one to whom all will answer one day. Subjects have to answer to a king, must give account to a king and one day all men will bow and give an account to King Jesus. Dying that day, giving His life that day was the King of glory, and He was dying for you and me. For today take some time and look around you at the power of Almighty God and think for a moment or two of the one who died on the cross that day.
