Job 23:1-11 Then Job answered and said,
2 Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.
3 Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!
4 I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.
5 I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.
6 Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.
7 There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.
8 Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:
9 On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:
10 But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
11 My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.

I cannot take the time this morning to detail all that Job is going through in his life, let us just say that he is in a place none of us want to be. Yet we all are in such a place from time to time in our lives, a place where we do not want to be, but a place none of us are sheltered from altogether. None of us know, including this pastor, what this New Year has in store. There may be the loss of loved ones, the loss of health, financial loss, none of us knows what this New year will hold. Certainly for some the things just named are in store for 2017. What shall we do, where can we turn? Job was in a place in his life where reason and understanding for the things that befell him were not found. Job in his mind was searching for God but could not find Him, was asking for help in understanding but none came, did not know where to turn. But this eternal truth did come to Job, “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.” Job did not understand the circumstances of life any better than he did before, but this one thing he knew, his God had not forsaken him, his God was going before him, and his God would bring him through the trials. The same is true today all these thousands of years later, the same in true today in 2017. Follow in His steps, keep His way, He will lead us through.
