John 13:3-10 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.
10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.
KJV
There is a picture here of our need for a daily cleansing from sin in our walk with the Lord. When an individual repents from sin and receives the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior they are saved for all eternity, they never need come to Jesus Christ for salvation again. However there is a need for a daily cleansing of sin in the life of the believer. That is what is pictured here in john 13. But I want to make another application this morning, not changing that picture of daily cleansing, but another application. As long as the Christian is filled with pride they can have no part in the Lord’s work, we need to be cleansed from all pride in order to be useable in the work of the Lord. What of that one who boasts of all that they have done, all that they have accomplished for God, that one who likes to point the spotlight on self and not Christ? For sure they will receive no rewards in heaven and they will lack any real blessings here. But that one has also set themselves up for a fall. Remember how Nebuchadnezzar boasted about what he had built after being warned by God to humble himself? I have witnessed many men and ministries fall today, good men of God, because they boasted the same way that king did. Remember that without Christ we can do nothing, we may be able to do all things in Christ, but without Him we can do noting. Where does pride fit in there? Until we are cleansed from all pride we can do nothing in the work of the Lord.
