15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

The shield and helmet were valuable pieces of armor because of what they could do and what they protected. A shield could be moved about, it could be held up, placed before and behind, some were large enough to cover the entire soldier. The helmet protected the head. At that time most wounds did not put a soldier out of action at once. A would to the arm or leg, one would keep fighting. Even a blow or arrow to the chest was not always fatal because of the breastplate. But a would to the head was most often fatal and even if not it put the soldier out of the fight. Our shield is one of faith, a faith that can cover and protect from every attack of the enemy from any side. A great faith is a great shield. The helmet secure us in Christ for even a blow to our head cannot shake our salvation in Jesus Christ. Put on your shield of faith today, let your faith in Christ carry you through the day, carry you through the battle before you. Rest secure in knowing you have on the helmet of salvation.
