Titus 3:8-14 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
12 When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.
13 Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.
14 And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
KJV
We are looking this week at maintaining good works. Two of the most important things in the Christian maintaining good works are constancy in Bible reading and prayer which we looked at Monday and Tuesday. Today we see something to avoid, (Verse 9) foolish questions, genealogies and contentions. It has been my experience that these arise among God’s people because of a lack of Bible reading and prayer. Many today will read any book about doctrine, religion, church, the Holy Spirit, any book about those things except the Bible. I know many who have become so caught up in the writings of the reformers, or the church fathers, or modern day writers that they turn away from the Bible. They read this and that, listen to this and that, but never the Bible. If I want to maintain anything for God it must be rooted and grounded in the Bible. Not the writings of the reformers, not what my teachers in Bible college said or thought, but what the Bible says. Martin Luther, Calvin and others were great men who did a lot for the church in leading it out of the dark ages, those men were used of God. But they were not God, they were just men. Don’t fawn over their writings at the expense of the Bible. If you are caught up in the way it speaks of in verse 9 above you are not moving toward good works, not moving toward a profitable life for the Lord in this world. I want to look at our walk before god and man over the next two days, but one cannot have a proper walk unless they have a proper foundation.
