Daily Devotions
April 25th, 2016 by Pastor SolleyTitus 3:8-14 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
12 When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.
13 Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.
14 And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
KJV
The word maintain is found only two times in the New Testament, both here in Titus chapter three. This is a command given to the Christian, that we would maintain good works, one so important that it is repeated is just a few verses. Think about what it is to maintain something. If I am going to maintain my car I am going to be paying constant attention to it. I will check the oil, the tire pressure, make sure it is serviced on time, the oil changed, the fittings greased and so on. I will clean it, washing the salt off it in the winter, the dust and dirt in the summer. If I am going to maintain my lawn I am going to pay attention to it, mowing it, trimming the weeds and shrubs, picking up blown down limbs, raking leaves, I am going to pay constant attention to it. To maintain something takes work. Our Christian life takes work as well and demands constant attention. I want to look at a few of these areas we need to maintain this week. This morning we begin with the reading of the Word of God. If you are reading this I know you have read a portion of the Word of God this morning or this day. But are these few verses enough? Do they give you the food, the spiritual food you need each day, or should there be more? I believe a god King James Bible devotional is a start, a good start for the day, but for me there needs be more. It is a good thing to take some time each day and set aside for the reading of the Bible, to allow God to speak to your heart. But understand, this is going to be work, it will be something that needs be maintained. Satan, your flesh, and the world will all work against you having this daily time of Bible reading. Satan does not want you to have it, your flesh will at times become lazy with it, and the world will always present something else to do. But this needs be maintained if we are going to grow in our Christian life, if we are going to get stronger in the Lord. How faithful are you in this? If you spend more time on your car and lawn than you do in the Bible you need to stop and begin to maintain your daily time in the Word of God.
