April 5th, 2016 by Pastor SolleyJudg 20:26-28 Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
27 And the children of Israel inquired of the Lord, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
28 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.

The main reason to fast is to seek after God, to enquire of God. This is the first use of the word “Fasted” in the Bible and we see Israel seeing the Lord in a time of trouble. If one does not seek after God during a fast it will be of little use or do little good spiritually. One may fast and spend that time watching TV, playing a video game, texting or some other activity, but if that time is not used in a spiritual way the fast is of little value spiritually. Not all activities need cease when one fasts, in fact some need to go on. One may need to work at their job, get things done around the house, spend time with children in play, not everything must or can cease when one enters into a fast. But there must also be attention paid to spiritual things, there must be time spent in the Word of God and in prayer, there must be time spent in meditation upon spiritual things. The fast does not have to be long, but it does need to be spiritual in order to have spiritual value. God answered this prayer and fast quickly because they spent all or much of that time seeking Him.
