Eph 5:18-20 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
KJV
In order for something to be filled it must first be emptied. I have a full coffee cup at the moment, in order for me to fill it again I must first empty that cup. The same things applies spiritually, if something is going to be filled it must first be emptied. The Bible tells us in Job 26:7 that when God created this world He stretched out the north over an empty space. God filled this world in creation, but it began empty. For the Holy Spirit of God to fill the Christian he or she must first be emptied. One must empty self of self in order for the Holy Spirit to fill him or her. I know that sounds like words going around in a circle but that is what our lives are like without God. We go around in the circle of self where we are all that matters, our wants, our needs, self, self, self is all that we think of. That needs to stop if we are going to be Spirit filled. As you go through this day stop and think of how much you focus on yourself, how little you focus on the Lord, and how little your focus in on others. A person consumed with self can never be filled with the Holy Spirit.
