Eph 5:17-21 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
KJV
What is it to be Spirit filled? I have talked with some people who have brought up Eph 5:18 as an excuse to drink alcohol saying God permit’s a Christian to drink as long as they don’t get drunk. That is taking the passage completely out of context and changing the Word of God. This is not permission to drink a little or drink socially as long as one does not get drunk. The Bible strictly forbids the consumption of alcohol and this has nothing to do with that foolishness. This has to do with being filled with the Holy Spirit of God. I want to look this week at what it is to be Spirit filled. The word filled is used in the Bible to describe a physical filling as well as a spiritual filling, it is also used to describe something that is filled to the point God needs to act. The first time the word filled is used in the Bible is in Genesis. (Gen 6:11-13 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. 13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.) This filling brought God to the point that He had to act. The last time the word filled is used is in Revelation. (Rev 18:6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.) This also speaks of judgment, of the one world government and religion in the tribulation being filled with sin and God having again to act. When something is filled in this way God has to act. That is the way the word filled is used in our text. Think about that today, about being filled to the point God has to act. Of course in our text it is not being filled with sin, but being filled with the Holy Spirit.
