Num 14:7-11 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
8 If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
9 Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.
10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.
11 And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
KJV
The sad truth about the children of Israel and the generation that fell in the wilderness during those forty years of wondering is that they did so by choice, and not a choice made without seeing. There are times perhaps when one can be excused for making bad choices because one cannot see ahead, but that is not the case here as Israel could look both behind and ahead. They could look behind and see all that God had done in bring them out of Egypt including the destruction of Pharaoh and his armies in the Red Sea. They could look ahead and see the beauty and goodness of the land that God promised them, they could see it all before them. Yet they decided to turn back, not to enter in, and as a result not only robbed themselves of the blessings of God but brought upon them the chastening of God. It is a picture of many who profess Christ today as we can look into the Word of God and see what God wants to do in our lives. At the same time we look at the world and what it has to offer and somehow think that could be better. Often our choices bring upon us the same thing that a bad choice brought to Israel, the chastening of the Lord. All the time God wants to bless us if we would only allow Him to.
