John 21:3-5 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.

Any life lived without Jesus Christ being first in thought, action, and service ends up being an empty life. These men caught nothing after a night of fishing. They were fishermen by trade and they would try again and again if need be and they would find some success. But their lives would never be the same as they where when they were following and serving the Lord. Remember Peter had left the nets, James and John had left the nets and gave up all to follow Jesus. Now they were going back to fishing. They had not renounced salvation, they still believed, they were secure in their faith and their place in heaven, but now they would go back to fishing. That first night they caught nothing and it is a picture of what lay ahead without Jesus Christ in it. Now we are not likely to be called to give up home and family, to leave occupation and all that we know to follow Christ as they were called to do. But the lesson is here for us, without Christ in it a life is empty, there will be no success and no real joy. When the question is asked “Do you have any meat” and you have to answer as the disciples did perhaps Christ is not where He needs to be in your life.
