Amos 1:1 The words of Amos, who was among the herdman of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

Just a word or two this morning about who God will use, who God is able to use in His service. Amos was a herdsman, a good occupation, an honest occupation, but hardly a noble one. It doesn’t take the wisest of people to be what Amos was, does not require a good education, one does not have to be an elegant speaker, a charismatic individual, none of those things are required to be a herdsman. Yet Amos was the one God chose and many like him as well. What was David? What was Saul? What were Peter and Andrew, James and John? All were common men with common occupations. So what set them apart for the Lord? A true faith and a willingness to serve. I watch as many today need to go to a well known school, then on to three or four more years at seminary, then to more and higher training, finally after years and years, more and more book knowledge and much if it not from the Bible, then they are ready to serve. I am not trying to disparage education, but God looks first to a sincere faith and a willing heart, His Spirit most often supplies all else that is needed.
