Kings 19:4-9 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

This question asked of God concerns service. Elijah has been and was a great prophet of God, one who stood before Ahab and announced the judgment of God that would fall upon Israel because of sin. Elijah called down fire from God, stopped the rains with his prayers and opened the skies three years later. Elijah was a mighty servant of the Lord. Yet the prophet became weary in the fight and not he was ready to quit, he had had enough. So the question from the Lord “What doest thou here, Elijah?” Did he really want to stop serving? This is an important lesson for the Christian in these trying times in which we live, do we really want to stop serving the Lord? It may seem like little is being accomplished, that the power of God has diminished as Satan has increased, that the darkness can not be pushed back. But is that really true? Has God lost His power, is Satan not above the God of heaven, does darkness cover all light? We know that is not true, not even close to being true, so why would we want stop serving the Lord. At times when we seem to be so weary in the fight allow the Lord’s question to lift us up, “What doest thou here?” Do you want to be found standing idle at His return or active in His service?
