Jer 2:13
13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.In that desert region where the people of God lived in the Old Testament there was always a need for water. When the people would hew or dig out a cistern they would chip and hammer away at rock. Make a round hole in the rock, as deep as they could, so that when it would rain the rain water would run into the cistern and it would be holding tank. This is most likely what his brothers threw Joseph into.
It would take a great deal of work to carve a cistern out of rock. Notice what Israel did in our text verse. They did all that work, but they made a cistern that would not hold water. It was wasted time and effort.
Make a spiritual application. How many people today labor and work at things that hold no water. Filling their lives with the world, with money, with anything and everything except the things of God. It does take effort to walk with the Lord, to live the Christian life. It is at times very hard work. But in the end it will hold water.
