June 15th, 2015 by Pastor Solley1 Kings 19:9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
God never asks a question just for the sake of it, there is always a point to that question. Elijah was a man of God, a prophet, and one who had not only given the Word of God to the people but stood and battled for the truth he proclaimed. As he is in mount Horeb he is in a weakened condition both physically and spiritually. Elijah had been worn down in the fight and was at the point of giving up, that is when God comes to the prophet with this question. God did speak to Elijah, strengthen him, and the prophet went on for the Lord then for many years. But I wonder this morning how many times God puts this question before His children today for much different reasons? Might that question be put to us, put to Christians when we are doing something else when we should be devoting time to Him? What doest thou here on the golf course, in the boat, at home, when you should be in church? What doest thou here in front of the TV, the smart phone when you could be reading your Bible, when you could be praying? What doest thou here in this place of sin when you should be separated from it? How many times has God asked this question of you? Most of the time we cannot give the answer Elijah did. (1 Kings 19:10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.) Elijah could say he had been serving and had worn down, what can we say when God asks us what we are doing?
