7 But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
Our nation is captivities by sports. Last night the NCAA Final Four ended, tonight the woman’s national championship game is on, the Master begins on Thursday, MLB opened up this week, the NFL draft is coming, then football season, on and on we go. Our nation is captivated by sports with the stars making 20, 30, even 40 million dollars a year and fans paying hundreds of dollars to see them play. Now I like sports, I watched a high school baseball game last night, I do like sports. But we need to keep things in a proper perspective, a proper balance. In eternity will it matter who won the big game, who scored the most points, who made the sports hall of fame? What matters in life is our relationship to Jesus Christ and our service to him. The Bible states just that in verse 8 above. There is some profit to bodily exercise, some, but not all that much and none when you lay it down beside eternity. I even watched the basketball game last night, but I do not live and die with “My team”, and those things should never come before the Lord.
