January 12th, 2015 by Pastor SolleyPs 1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
In this first book of Psalms the Bible speaks of the way of prosperity. (Verse 3) Isn’t that goal of people, to prosper? No one sets out on a path with the idea of failure in mind, at least they shouldn’t start out that way. But the truth is that many people stumble and fall, many fail in their life’s pursuits. In this first Psalm we find the pathway to success so let us examine it for the next few days.
The first thing we find is the importance of wise counsel. (Verse 1) I have had many counselors in my lifetime, some very good and some not so good. The one thing they all have in common is that the good ones were spiritual people, the not so good not so spiritual. Even some who were saved were not always the best to look to for advice because they were not spiritual, they were not walking close to the Lord, they had a lack of commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ. They were saved, they went to church, but there was a lack of commitment. When we look for counsel in any area of life we ought to know that we dare not look to the ungodly. The ungodly have different standards, different wants and desires, live by a different set of rules and serve a different God than the Christian. But we also need to look, not only to Christians, but to spiritual people. I can’t count how many professing Christians I have heard tell others it is not important to be in church. That is not wise counsel. I know those same ones have a lack of spiritual insight, so why look to them for counsel? If you want to prosper, first determine who not to follow, who not to listen to, who not to ask for advice.
