Luke 13:6-9 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.
7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?
8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:
9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

On this last day of 2014 I want to consider what God wants to do within the lives of the redeemed in Christ. The certain man in this parable would be the Lord Jesus Christ, the vineyard the believer in Christ, the dresser of the vineyard the Holy Spirit of God. God has every right to expect to find fruit on the vine when He inspects it. Saved by the blood of Christ, delivered fro the penalty and power of sin, Christ has every right to find fruit on the vine, and when He does not to chasten. Not only is the Lord longsuffering and patient as we saw yesterday, He also provides what is needed to bring life, spring new life in the vine. Here we see one digging and dressing, fertilizing the vine, doing all that is needed and all that is possible to bring fruit to that vine. Now it is up to the vine and there is a judgment day coming, a day when the certain man will come and inspect the vine. As of this moment it looks like we will begin another year, we need to make it a year in the Lord. A year when we allow the Holy Spirit to work within and we respond to Him instead of ignoring Him. A year when we allow Him to dig out what needs to be taken away and add what we need to grow. That is what the vine dresser will do. What does the Holy Spirit need to dig out of your life today? What needs to be added?
