46 Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.
47 And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,
48 And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.
The first thing that Jesus did after coming into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday was cleanse the temple in the account given to us here in Luke. What was to be a place of worship and prayer had been turned into a den of thieves. Many take this to mean that things should never be sold in a church house today, but they miss the point of what has happened today and what happened in Jesus’ day. The church has again been turned into a den of thieves and it has nothing to do with what can be bought or sold inside the doors or under the banner of the church. Today the gospel message has been stolen and a false gospel is sold to the multitudes. A false gospel of good works, a false gospel of church tradition, a false gospel of the doctrine of men, the true gospel has been replaced by many a false gospel in our churches today. I know of one who protects the church house he is responsible for, nothing bought or sold, no advertisements at all, he doesn’t want it to be a den of thieves. Yet at the same time he promotes things contrary to sound doctrine. There are many false doctrines being presented from pulpits today, making the house of God a real den of thieves.
