1 Kings 1:1-4
1:1 Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
2 Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
3 So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4 And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.As the account of I Kings begins David is an old man, weak and about to die. He needs someone to care for him, to keep him warm, to look after him. They make search for a young virgin to be close to him and to provide him those things. She is found and brought to David and does wait on him, does care for him, does cherish him. But I have a question.
Where were David’s wives? Was there not one, and he had many, was there not one who loved him and cherished him, was there not one who was willing to care for David? What trouble David had in his house. Ever wonder why?
Because David never followed a Biblical standard when choosing a wife. Read of his life and you will see David never followed a Biblical standard when choosing a wife. It was always for political gain or lust that David chose a wife. He never followed after God in this.
God has a standard we are to follow. Keep it, follow it, look for that one who loves the Lord, has a Godly character, wants to serve Christ, and you will find a home free of the trouble David faced. You will find someone you can depend upon and someone who will care for you.
