Matt 13:1-11 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. 2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. 3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; 4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: 5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: 6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: 8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. 9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. 10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

Why did Jesus speak so often in parables? It was not as many like to believe to make the Word of God a mystery, to make it hard to understand. For many years now the Jewish people were held as if it were in captivity by the Pharisees, by religious men who twisted the Word of God to suit their purpose, to elevate themselves above the people. It was a religious system the people had grown used to, so used to that they could not see the light of Scripture. When Jesus spoke in parables it was not to hide the truth from the people but to show the truth to the people, to shine light on the Word of God, to reveal the mystery of His Word and not to hide it. These truths were not being hid from the Pharisees in the parables, rather the Pharisees would not look, would not receive the simple truth of the Word of God. The truth of Scripture is not hidden, it lies upon the surface of God’s Word, it is there for every seeking heart to see. Yes we are to study, yes we are to meditate, yes we need to look deep into the Word of God, but not at the expense of missing the great truths that God would have us all to see. Don’t look so deep that you miss the truth as the Pharisees did, rather look to the Word of God and see the treasures that lie upon the surface.
