Gen 25:23-27 And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger. 24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau. 26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. 27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

Soon I will be heading out the door all dressed up in warm clothing, it is the first day of antlered deer season here in PA. The Bible does not say a great deal about hunters, at least in a positive way. Here we find Esau was a cunning hunter, he was good at the task. But spiritually speaking Esau was not what he was supposed to be before the Lord. There is nothing God wants more than for His children to be right spiritually with Him, that should be what we hunt for. Nothing wrong with going to the woods this morning, nothing wrong with taking that big buck, noting wrong with spending time enjoying hunting. But we need to keep things in balance as well. Serving the Lord, reading the Bible, prayer, telling others about Christ, being in the house of God, those things are not to be set aside so we can go hunting. Esau didn’t miss the blessings of God because he was a mighty hunter, he missed the blessings of God because he lost balance in his life, he was not what he was supposed to be spiritually.
