November 26th, 2013 by Pastor SolleyEph 5:1-4 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. 3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
In Eph 5 the Christian is commanded to be a follow of God, to walk as Christ walked. Then there are several things named that are not to be a part of the Christian life in verses 3 and 4. Fornication, uncleanness, covetousness, filthiness, foolish talking and the like are not to be a part of the Christian life. The verse then concludes with this phrase “But rather the giving of thanks”. I would then conclude that for the Christian to be unthankful, to be ungrateful is a sin as well. God has done great things for us through Jesus Christ and we ought to be thankful, not just at Thanksgiving time but day by day we ought to show an attitude of thanksgiving to God. As I visit and meet people I come into contact with some very thankful Christians going through some very hard times. People who are in hospitals, nursing homes, some dying, and all the while giving thanks and praising the Lord for what He has done for them. I also meet people the exact opposite, some going through minor trials, or no trials at all, and they have nothing good to say about anything. They complain about everything. No doubt as I go out today, and there are visits I have planned, some will talk of the beauty of the snow, and some will complain about the weather. God wants us to be a thankful people.
