Ps 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

What is it to have a table prepared in the presence of the enemy? We see that the shepherd protects his sheep in verse 4, but now we see a table prepared in the presence of the enemy in verse 5. The sheep prosper in the presence of the enemy. The lion, the bear, the wolf, the enemies of the sheep may be stronger than the sheep, at time they may even be many as in the case of a pack of wolves, but the sheep have a table prepared for them by the shepherd and they can even prosper in the presence of the enemy. That is because of the ever watchful eye and care of the shepherd who is over them. The enemies of the Christian are great and many. Satan for one, the world, our flesh, pride, temptation, on and on we could go. Some enemies from without, others from within, but the enemies of the Christian are many and powerful. Yet we can prosper in the presence of all of them if we just simple place our lives in the hands of the good shepherd, if we give ourselves completely into His tender care, place ourselves under His watchful eye. Christian, are you one that prospers or struggles in the presence of the enemy? Are you given to the shepherd’s care, have you turned your life over to Him?
