Eph 2:1-6 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

To remember what one was helps one to remember what they are. I am not saying that one should dwell on sins of the past to the point that they become a burden and hinder us. After all when Jesus saved us He also forgave us all of our sin as well. Jesus will never hold sins of the past against the believer in Christ so we should not hold onto them. I know many a professing Christians who cannot get over past sin to the point they think they can do noting for the Lord, that they are not worthy of serving Him, even of having close relationships with other believers. They seem to think the sin that they used to be in has stained them and they can doing nothing for Christ. Sin does leave scars but if Jesus has forgiven completely and entirely and that is good enough for Him then it is good enough for anybody. Back to the point now this morning, when we look behind it is not always a bad thing to remember what we were. How so? It helps us to remember what we are. As I sit at my desk this morning I sit with Christ Jesus in heavenly places, I stand before the very throne of God in Christ, I am His blood bought child, loved by Him, kept by Him, provided for by Him. Christian we are special to Him! How much greater a blessing is that when we remember what we once were?
