Jer 1:1-9 The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: 2 To whom the word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3 It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month. 4 Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. 6 Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. 7 But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. 8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. 9 Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.

Like many today when they are called Jeremiah offered up an excuse to the Lord. (Verse 6) But Jeremiah was not simply trying to get out of serving the Lord, Jeremiah was turning from God to do his own thing, Jeremiah had a real concern. Jeremiah was a young man, why then would the people listen to him? In the very next few verses God takes away his fears and concerns. Jeremiah would walk in the power of God and speak in the wisdom of God, God would give him the words, God would be with the prophet. That was assurance enough for Jeremiah and the weeping prophet went forth. God will as well take away all our fears and concerns if we but trust in Him. The same God that walked with Jeremiah walks with us. (Heb 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.) The same God that filled Jeremiah with the words to speak will fill us when we speak for Him. (Matt 10:19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.) When we have real concerns and real fears God will answer them, God will meet them. Are we simply making excuses not to serve Him or do we have real concerns. God will meet out every need.
