Luke 5:29-32 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. 30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? 31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. 32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

What part does repentance play in salvation? Many today say that repentance plays no part in salvation at all, that all one needs to do is acknowledge sin, believe in Jesus, and they are saved. This has led to the easy believesim of our day, a shallow salvation that sees no change in the lost, no evidence of fruit in the professing Christian. It also causes one to wonder if that one who professes Christ is realty saved or not. Consider the fact that Satan knows he has sinned, that Satan believes in Jesus, and you see that there is more to salvation than that. According to the Bible Jesus preached repentance. (Verse 32) John the Baptist preached repentance. (Matt 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance)
Peter preached repentance. (Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.) Paul preached repentance. (Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent) Repentance must play a part in salvation and if it does why do so many want to leave it out of preaching and witnessing today? Because repentance means a man must face his sin and lost condition and people just do not like to do that. A few weeks ago on door to door soul winning I asked a man if he knew for sure that he would go to heaven one day, his answer was yes and then I asked him why. He said he didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, didn’t curse, tried to be good, helped everybody he could, went to church, and that God would think highly of those things. God may think highly of them but that man has never faced his sin, never saw himself as God sees him, never has seen a reason to repent. That man is still lost in sin. Over the next few days we will consider Biblical repentance and the need for it in salvation.
