1 John 1:1-7 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

The word fellowship is found 17 times in the Bible, 4 of them in this first chapter of I John. What is fellowship? A dear brother in Christ who is now with the Lord used to say that fellowship was “Two fellows in the same ship”. They would be going the same direction, doing the same things, working together to a common and expected end. That is fellowship. Christian fellowship is a most important thing and especially between the believer and Christ. If we are going to have any joy at all in our Christian life we need to be in fellowship with Christ, we need to be in the same ship with Jesus, doing the same things, going the same direction to a common and expected end. The reason that so few Christian have any real joy today is that there is no fellowship. They have fellowship with friends in school and at work, with family saved or lost, with those in the same clubs with them, but no fellowship with Christ. If the things that hinder that fellowship with the Lord would be set aside as God commands and all things that lead to Christian fellowship were taken on there would be a great change in the life of the Christian. An outward change but more important an inward change for the better. We would find that joy that John is speaking about here and we would find it in fellowship with Christ.
