Amos 8:9-11 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day: 10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day. 11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord:

I will hear from professing Christians from time to time something like this, “God doesn’t seem to hear me when I pray, or speak to me, I can’t get anything out of His Word”. Perhaps the problem is the same one that Israel had in the day of Amos. The people had for so long forsaken the Word of the Lord, ignored God, walked in their own way, that God was sending a famine of His Word. (Verse 11) God was no longer speaking to them, they had ignored the prophets warning long enough, tested the patience of God long enough, walked in the world long enough, God was no longer going to speak to them, judgment was falling. Why is it that we tend to think we can do our own thing, walk our own way, ignore the Word of God, the house of God, service for God, and then expect God to run to our aid when we find ourselves in trouble? Like Israel we can push God too far. Most always when one says that God is not near them, does not speak to them, does not listen to them, there is good reason. Don’t push God to the point that He sends a famine of His Word to you.
