February 18th, 2013 by Pastor SolleyLuke 9:29-35 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. 30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: 31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. 33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. 34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
I want to look at same instances of sleep in the Bible this week. We certainly do need to sleep and need rest physically each day in order to function properly and stay healthy. But there are many times when we sleep too much, times when sleep overtakes us when we should be doing something. The same is true spiritually. In our text this morning we find the disciples asleep when they should have been awake. Jesus had taken the inner circle with Him into the mount and there He would meet with the Father. Now I don’t believe the disciples knew what was about to take place but they had to know it was going to be something special. Why did He depart from the others, why take just them, why up into the mount? All these things pointed to something special about to happen. And now while Jesus talked with the Father, while Moses and Elijah came to Him, while he was transfigured, while all this was going on, they fell asleep. Can you imagine sleeping through that event? And when they did wake up, because they had been sleeping, it caused them, caused Peter to make a foolish request. Here sleep was not a good thing. I often wonder how many blessings of God, how many miracles I may have missed because I was sleeping when I should have been awake. There are times when we should be active for Jesus, active in prayer, active in Bible reading, and instead we sleep or waste precious time on other things. We need to be awake to the things of God, To the workings of God, or there is no telling what we might miss.
