Matt 25:21-25 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.

What might it be like to stand before the judgment seat of Jesus Christ watching the rewards being given out and knowing that when it was your turn you have nothing to offer and nothing to receive? And what was this man’s excuse? He was afraid. Not that he did not have talent, not that he did not have time, not that he lacked opportunity, he was afraid. I remember when I was coaching on the little league level, the teen league level, and in high school, one thing I would always tell the kids on each lever was, “don’t be afraid to try, don’t be afraid to fail, and don’t be afraid to succeed”. Fear often holds people back even in the spiritual realm. I can’t count all the times I have heard people tell me they are afraid. Pastor, I would like to go on visitation, but I am afraid. Pastor, I would love to give a testimony in church, but I am afraid. Pastor, I would love to help with camp, but I am afraid. Over and over again people let the excuse of fear hold them back. Want to know a secret? I am also afraid, afraid when knocking on doors, when speaking before others, when going on with the camp project, church projects and the like, I am often times afraid. But if let fear be our excuse nothing will ever get done for the Lord. Read on in the chapter and you will find that Jesus did not except fear as an excuse.
