Verse 14 above is an often quoted verse today. We live today in a nation in need of forgiveness and healing from above. What I would like to take note of this morning is the time and the circumstances that surround that verse. When God said this Israel had not drifted from the Lord, Solomon had just completed the temple, and the glory of the Lord had filled it. This was a high point in Israel, the high point spiritually during the reign of Solomon. Why then these verses, why then verse 14? God was showing His people the cure before the troubled came. God knew that Israel would turn away, that He would have to judge sin in the land, and God was showing them how to avoid the judgment and stay close to Him. Yet when they began to drift the nation did not pray, did not call out to Him, did not humble themselves before God. As a result the nation was judged and the nation dif fall. We face the same problem today and it did not begin overnight. Our nation for generations now has been going into an ever deepening darkness of sin. What to do is the question of our day for the Christian and God’s Word has the answer. (Verse 14) If God’s people had done this we would not be where we are and if God’s people would do this perhaps it would stem the tide of sin. I say perhaps not because I doubt God, but because I doubt the sincerity of the people of God today. How often do you pray for the nation, pray for revival, weep over sin before God? God has given the cure for America.
