She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. 22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
How is it that Jesus said to this woman “Ye know not what ye ask.”? She certainly knew what she was asking, but did she know the cost? Many times we bring things to the Lord in the same way that this mother did. She wanted the best for her children, she wanted them to be honored with the Lord and there is nothing wrong with those things from a mother’s heart. But she did not stop and consider what it was going to cost. Jesus did and that is why he answered the way that he did and her sons I think realized as well. My friend we need to be careful in prayer as we often ask things to better ourselves or circumstances without ever considering the will of God or what it may cost. We are to ask great things of God and our God is able to do great things for us. But we also need to pray for our lives to glorify Him and not self and pray for His blessed will in our lives.
