Jonah 1:1-3 NOW the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. 3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

We read this passage and we think how foolish it was of Jonah to flee from the presence of the Lord. How could this prophet of God possible think that God would not be in Tarshish? Jonah should have known better. But how many Christians today try and flee from the presence of the Lord? They think that God is not with them as they sit in front of the TV, that God is not with them as they sit in front of the PC, that God is not with them in the movie house, or the barroom, that God is not with them in the workplace or at school, that God does not hear what they say, what they listen to, that God does not see what they look at and God can’t possible know what they imagine. There are a lot of Jonahs today and they fool God no more than Jonah did, they get away from the presence of the Lord no more than Jonah did. We need to realize that as Christians we are never and can never be removed from the presence of the Lord. That thought can and should change the way we live in this world. Don’t try and flee from the presence of the Lord, it cannot be done.
