Rom 13:8-11 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. 9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. 11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

What is it that we owe? Today people live as if they owe nothing and are entitled to everything. But is that true of the Christian? The Bible states that we are to owe no man any ting. (Verse 8) But we need then to read the rest of the verse and what follows and we find that the Christian does owe something. We owe men our love, “But love one another”. But it is not really our love we owe, it is the love of Jesus Christ that has been shed abroad in our heart. (Rom 5:5) We are to love one another as well as demonstrate the love of Christ to a lost and dying world, we are to love. Notice as well verse 9 and we find we owe a holy life to Christ. We don’t live and follow after righteousness to be saved, salvation is a free gift of God offered to all through Jesus Christ, rather we live and follow after righteousness because we are saved. We owe it to God to live for Jesus Christ and in a fashion that brings praise and not shame to Him name. Far too many people today live as if they are entitled to everything and owe nothing.
