Matt 17:14-21 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. 16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. 17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

This account takes place a day after Jesus had been transfigured before James, John and Peter. This man had brought his son to the disciples and looked for a healing. Were Peter, James and John with the others or were they still with Jesus, we are not sure. One thing we do know, they could not cast out the demon. The question is, why not? First because we are powerless without the presence of Christ. Even the Christian today is powerless without the abiding presence of Christ. Now He is with us always, but we are not always with Him. This is the reason many struggle with the Christian life, we are not with Him everyday. How much time do you spend in prayer and in the Word of God each day Christian? Most who fail in their walk with the Lord do so because they refuse to walk with the Lord. Jesus had some strong words for the disciples here, He calls they faithless and perverse. Not because they did not believe on Him but because they failed to do what was essential to serve Him. They needed to be with Jesus, to pray, to depend on Him and His power alone. Friend, we will never be successful in our walk with the Lord, in our service for the Lord unless we walk with the Lord. Not just on Sunday but every day of the week, every hour of the day. Let us do what is necessary and essential to maintain a walk with our Lord and serve our Lord.
