Matt 5:1-11 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: 2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. 10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Isn’t it a wonderful thing to be taught by Jesus? The multitudes sitting before Him were the ones that heard the first prophet in Israel in 400 years, John the Baptist. John was a powerful preacher with a powerful message. But that one greater than John, the Lord Jesus Christ was now speaking and Jesus excelled them all. Greater than John, greater than all the prophets of the Old Testament, Jesus excelled them all. Isn’t it a wonderful thing to be taught by Jesus? Only if we listen and obey my friend, only if we listen and obey. And that is the problem now today is it not? It was the problem in Jesus day as well. The very same ones taught by Him put Him rejected Him and put Him on the cross. People still do the same thing today, not in a literal way, but the same thing none the less. How many heard the Word of God in the house of God last week, perhaps told the preacher what a good message it was, but forgot all that they heard the moment they walked out of the church? Judging by the way people live today, most of them did just that. Yet we are being taught by Jesus today. In a Bible believing church where the Word of God is preached, where the Spirit of God is leading the preacher, where he is filled with the Holy Spirit, it is not man that speaks but God. Just as God used the prophets of old He uses the preaching of the Word of God today. Not in new revelation but in revealing the will of God for man today. But are we willing to listen and obey? Or are we like the multitudes sitting before Jesus?
