33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, 34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. 35 Jesus wept. 36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! 37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
Jesus two times in this passage “Groaned” in His Spirit. Jesus was angered my friend but over what? Not with Mary and Martha, not with those paid to weep at the grave, and not with Lazarus. Jesus was angry over sin and over what sin causes. Sin brings death and sorrow, sin is the reason men die, and Jesus was angry over sin. Praise God He was and is able to do something about it. I spent the first part of yesterday visiting in the hospital, then had a funeral for one who was 63 and died of cancer, and spent the afternoon sitting with a family watching their 53 year old, daughter, sister, and mom die of cancer. As I think of the day, hospital, funeral, hospital, I see the same thing Jesus saw at the grave of Lazarus, the result of sin. But I am not angry as He was although it troubles me. I am thankful today, thankful that Jesus Christ is still doing something about sin, thankful that Jesus Christ is the answer today just as He was at the grave of Lazarus. I am thankful that Jesus took care of the sin problem for me. As for the funeral and the stay at the hospital in the afternoon, both know Jesus Christ as their personal savior. One had already seen the face of Jesus and the other waits to see Him. I am not angry over sin today as Jesus was then although it troubles me. I am thankful for what Jesus did and does with sin.
