23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Yesterday we looked at the faith of the multitude. Let us call that a curious faith. They wanted from Jesus all that they could get. They knew there was a greatness about Him and wanted Him to give to them the good things of life. When they thought they had all that they would get they went quietly away. This morning let us consider the faith of the disciples. Jesus commanded them to get into the ship and to go to the other side. (Matt 14:22) The disciples had the faith to obey. If you read John 1 what may have been a curious faith in the beginning turned into a faith that would obey. Not only did they know there was something special about Jesus they knew who Jesus was and is. Not only did they know, they obeyed. They may not have understood why He was sending them to the other side or why He was not going with them, but they obeyed. True faith will lead to obedience to the Word of God. That first command that must be obeyed is found in John 3, “Ye must be born again”. That obedient faith for salvation will lead to an obedient faith in a daily walk with Christ. Today one has to wonder when we see so many professing Christians who live more like the world than like Christ what type of faith they have. Did they ever move past a curious faith? Obedience becomes the test of love does it not? Jesus said, “If ye love me keep my commandments”. What type of faith will you show the world today? When they look at your life will they see an obedient faith?
