27:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
4 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.
5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock .There are three places for the Christian to be found in verse 5 of Psalms 27. They point to three stages of the Christian life.
(1) There is the pavilion. When I think of a pavilion I think of a place of shelter. A place to run to in a storm, to be protected from the wind and rain. Or a place to be protected from the hot sun of summer. A place to find shelter and rest. Many run to the Lord when in this type of need.
(2) The tabernacle. The place of worship and fellowship. We think of the tabernacle of the Old Testament and how all of Israel were gathered around it. We gather in the tabernacle of Christ today to worship Him, to have fellowship with those of like precious faith. It is good to be in the tabernacle even when we have not fled there for shelter.
(3) The rock. This is the place of assurance, the place upon which we can stand, the place we can fight if necessary to defend our faith. We can be sure of our rock, we have a place to stand, a strong place where the storms can never beat it or us down. Jesus Christ is our rock.
We do need run to Christ, to our pavilion when in trouble. But we should already be there, already be in our tabernacle. And that place of refuge and worship needs be on the solid rock.
