January 4th, 2012 by Pastor SolleyJohn 13:31-37 31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. 36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. 37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.
There are times when God simply “Shuts doors” as we say. In our text Peter thought he was ready to follow the Lord anywhere. (Verse 37) We know by the record of Scripture that he was not. Peter didn’t lay down his life for Jesus, Peter would not even admit to knowing Jesus a few hours later. Now years later, after he had grown in the Lord, grown in the strength of the Holy Spirit, grown in the wisdom of God, Peter did lay down his life for Jesus. But in John 13 Peter was not yet ready. There are times when we want to run before the Lord and we are not yet ready. People seem to be in a hurry about everything today, fast food, drive through, 24 hour service for cleaning and so on, people seem to be in a hurry about everything. But there arte times when we need to slow down and wait upon the Lord. That is Biblical my friend, wait upon the Lord. It just may be that our God wants us to stop, wait, and learn. That is what Peter needed to do and when the time did come to lay down his life for Jesus he was ready to do it. We need not be in a hurry about Spiritual things, we need to first wait on the Lord. That is not to say that we are not to move when God opens the door. We just need to follow the Lord.
