Matt 1:18-25 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Have you ever wondered what Joseph was thinking about? (Verse 20) Joseph could have been and probably was thinking about many tings. His rights under the Law of Moses. The one he was espoused to had apparently been unfaithful during their engagement period. Under the Law he could write a bill of divorcement. The shame that had been brought to him. The shame to his family and to hers as well. Joseph could have been thinking about a lot of things. In my mind Joseph was thinking about spiritual things. Why do I think that? Because when the angel came to Joseph he was ready to believe. Joseph knew the Scriptures, knew the promises of the Messiah, knew the Lord. Joseph was a just man not only before men but before God as well. Joseph was thinking of spiritual things. It is a lesson for us today. When troubles come we often focus on them or we try and figure out exactly what our rights are. What can we do to get someone back and still be justified? Who can we blame? What are our rights and how far can we take them? A better thing to do is get before the Lord in prayer, get into the Bible and set our minds on spiritual things. Joseph was thinking about something but it was not himself. Joseph had a mind settled on the Lord even in difficult times. Where does our mind settle in troubled times?
