1 John 2:15-18 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

At this Christmas time of year I often think of man’s love for the world, the Christian’s love for the world. The most often heard question from Thanksgiving up until Christmas Day is “What do you want for Christmas?” Yet it is to be the giving of the Son of God into the world that we celebrate is it not? I am not condemning Christmas giving of gifts, the decorated tree, family gatherings and the like. But I do think that even the vast majority of Christians today have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas falls on Sunday thins year and I can think of no better day to gather in the house of God and worship the Lord Jesus Christ. Yet I have already heard of many churches not having regular services on that day. No Sunday School so the people will not have to rush to church. No evening service so they will not have to leave a family dinner to go back to church. But what then are they saying? Church is important, Sunday Scholl is important, evening service is important, unless they fall on what should be the most important day of the year for the Christian. There would be no cross, no empty tomb if the Son of God were not given to a lost and dying world. Let us put Jesus Christ back into Christmas this year. Let it be more than gifts, a tree, family and friends. Let Christmas be a day for the Lord and not the world.
