We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. 7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
Here we find our example in love, God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us in verse 7 that we are to love one another. But who are we to love? Are there just certain ones, those we agree with, those who are deserving of our love, or those we simply choose to love? Who exactly are we to love? You say that we are to love everyone, but why? Because God is our example in love and God’s love is known according to verse 9 because He loved the world. (John 3:16) We are not to withhold our love from anybody because God did not withhold His love from anybody. We don’t look for someone who is deserving of love because God did not look for some who were deserving of the love of Christ. We don’t choose who to love and those to not love because God did not choose to withhold His love from any. We need to follow the example of God in love. What is the measure of your love for others today? Let us follow the example of Jesus Christ.
