Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? 33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. 34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? 35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; 36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? 37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. 38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him. 39 Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,
Jesus had a very simple question for the Jews who sought to take His life; “For which of those works do ye stone me?” Jesus had preformed many miracles proving Himself to be the Christ, the Son of God yet the people and the leaders of Israel wanted to take His life. The reason was not for the works that He did but the words that He spoke. It is Bible preaching and Bible doctrine that upsets people, it did then and it does today. A man can faithfully serve the Lord, walking daily in the light of the Word of God, doing the works of God that mark a Christian and few seem to notice. But let him proclaim the Word of God and the enemies of God are not hard to find. This is why good works alone are not enough to win the lost for Christ. People need to hear sound doctrine, sound preaching for this is what still brings conviction today, and this is still what upsets people today. Christian, the lost need to hear the gospel message, need to hear of Jesus love for them, need to hear that Christ died for all and that all can be saved. If they never hear they will never come to Christ. It is not good works that saved you and your good works will never save another. They need to hear the preaching of the gospel.
