2 Kings 2:1 And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
2 Kings 2:9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
KJV
The most important, valuable, and lasting thing we can leave behind when we leave this world is an example to follow. Elisha wanted to be what Elijah was for the Lord and more. Large bank accounts, houses, cars, and even lands will be spent, wear out, and be sold, but the example will continue on. We are still reading of Elijah, Elisha, David, Daniel, Ruth, Esther, Peter, John, Mary and Paul. The example they left continues on for all of these thousands of years. Today I remember those who have had a great influence upon my life and the spiritual example they set, some of them gone now for fifty years. I still listen to advice they gave me, follow the God they served, hear echos of their prayers in my mind and those things still move me today. The most important thing any of us can leave behind is a Godly example of faithfulness, trust and service for our Lord and Savior. What example will we leave behind?
