And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

What was the sin that had Peter in such anguish that he would say to Jesus “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man”? Peter had before believed in Jesus as the Son of God, listened to the preaching of Jesus, and obeyed the command of Jesus to go out onto the sea and let down the nets. What was the sin that had Peter in such anguish? Peter doubted what Jesus was able to do and even in obedience to the command of Jesus obeyed while doubting. (Verse five.) What doubts keep you in anguish today dear Christian? We know the power of God as revealed in creation, in the Bible and in our lives day unto day and yet many times we doubt what our God is able to do. What if we just asked Him to removed all of our doubts and fears and trusted Him completely? Perhaps we would then not be so astonished at what our God can do as Peter was. Peter never uttered those words again because Peter began to put doubts and fears behind him and Jesus in front of him.
